ELDES: monitoring systems for cold forming

The monitoring of the correct working of the machines for the metal forming (in particular presses for wire, for sheet and rolling machines) is successfully carried out through devices able to measure the force developed on the piece during the manufacturing process.

Through the application of some sensors on the machines, the devices of Eldes can monitor the applied force in each instant of the manufacturing, stopping it in case of anomalies.

The force is a parameter through which the invariance of the dimensions is monitored ; this correspondence between stress and forming can be led up to a dimensional defect is recognized, but can unlikely build an analytical correspondence between the two characteristics, also because the stress is affected by more factors at the same time, not least the hardness of the material.

This is not a limit but it is the main factor of the success of this monitoring technique, in fact while controlling the repeatability of the force, other malfunctioning causes are supervised at the same time:

• imprecision in feeding the material in the presses
• variability of the hardness and of the breakdown load of the material
• bad set-up of the machine or criticism of the process
• breakdown of the tooling, of different sizes, up to minimal defectiveness
• pollution of the products with parts of of different sizes, in case of rolling machines.

In progressive headers the shape of the wave clearly shows the 6 phases of manufacturing process. ED08, a state-of-the-art equipment with touch screen interface, that allows the operator to totally monitor the machine and its process.
